As part of a nationwide teach-in initiative to combat global warming, DePauw participated in Focus the Nation this month. Professors from all departments were asked to lead forum sessions relating their discipline to the ever-pressing issues of climate change. This year’s DePauw Discourse, October 4-6, focused on sustainability and global citizenship, and featured several speakers, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Bill McKibben.

Sunday, 9/23–Majora Carter
Environmental problems fall hardest on people of color and the poor. But urban citizens are leading the way on environmental activism, renewing their communities and promoting environmental justice. Majora Carter, founder of Sustainable South Bronx, spoke Sunday 9/23 in the Walden Inn Social Center about her organization’s work installing green roofs, designing parks and bike paths, increasing neighborhood safety, and creating jobs in her community. In her presentation, Carter described environmental justice as the “civil rights movement of the twenty-first century.”
