Campus Landfill – Fall 2008
During the Party in the Park in Bowman Park last Saturday, DePauw
Environmental Club did a recycling/composting demonstration called
Campus Landfill… we also did this in Academic Quad during Earth Week
last spring.
Here’s the idea:
-Start out with 9 bags of “trash” collected from around campus.
-Stay as clean as possible while picking through waste. separating the
Co-mingled plastics (#1, 2, 6), glass, tin, aluminum, and steel into
clear plastic bags… and separating corrugated cardboard from other
recyclable Mixed Paper such as magazines, newspapers, office paper,
cereal boxes etc. …. and picking out compostable material like banana
peels, green ware cups from the hub, and coffee grounds. mmmmmm!!
- Here’s the kicker though: out of those 9 bags of “trash” we found:
*1 bag of Compostables
*3 bags of Co-Mingles
*1 bag of Corrugated Cardboard
*2 bags of Mixed Paper
WOW. And that was just the first week of school. Check how much better
we could do as a campus! This info should serve as a motivator to be
more vocal in your living spaces and in academic buildings about how we,
as a campus, can reduce the amount of waste we pour into landfills.
We would love for interested students to come to our meetings and share
their ideas about how DePauw Environmental Club can positively influence
this campus.
Wednesdays at 6:30 Asbury 111.
