The Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture Series sponsored Ralph Nader and his presentation, “Don’t Waste Your 20’s: Your Most Creative Decade,” in Kresge on Thursday night. Nader challenged the audience to get involved with the world around them.

Sunday, 9/23–Majora Carter
Environmental problems fall hardest on people of color and the poor. But urban citizens are leading the way on environmental activism, renewing their communities and promoting environmental justice. Majora Carter, founder of Sustainable South Bronx, spoke Sunday 9/23 in the Walden Inn Social Center about her organization’s work installing green roofs, designing parks and bike paths, increasing neighborhood safety, and creating jobs in her community.  In her presentation, Carter described environmental justice as the “civil rights movement of the twenty-first century.”

Monday, 9/24–Panel Discussion
This panel dicussion in Watson Forum featured:

  • Darci Thomas, ‘95, Senior Technical Manager at August Mack Environmental, on brownfield redevelopment.
  • Meredith Williams described her path from silicon valley physicist to project manager at the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI), where she works on a range of wetlands and watershed projects.
  • Cheryl Johnson, Director of People for Community Recovery (PCR), on the health impacts of environmental hazards concentrated in Altgeld Gardens, a public housing project in Chicago.

Allen Distinguished Visiting Professor bell hooks

Allen Distinguished Visiting Professor bell hooks is at DePauw September 17-21. During her opening lecture, hooks spoke to a packed Watson Forum about the importance of sustainability, the mistake of associating Black environmentalism exclusively with urban environmental justice struggles, and the agrarian roots of African Americans.

Greening of the Campus VII at Ball State

September 6-8, DePauw sent a team of nine students, two staff, and one faculty member to Ball State University to attend the longest running national conference on campus sustainability in the U.S., hosted by Ball State University.
