Sunday, 9/23–Majora Carter
Environmental problems fall hardest on people of color and the poor. But urban citizens are leading the way on environmental activism, renewing their communities and promoting environmental justice. Majora Carter, founder of Sustainable South Bronx, spoke Sunday 9/23 in the Walden Inn Social Center about her organization’s work installing green roofs, designing parks and bike paths, increasing neighborhood safety, and creating jobs in her community. In her presentation, Carter described environmental justice as the “civil rights movement of the twenty-first century.”

- Meredith Williams described her path from silicon valley physicist to project manager at the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI), where she works on a range of wetlands and watershed projects.
- Cheryl Johnson, Director of People for Community Recovery (PCR), on the health impacts of environmental hazards concentrated in Altgeld Gardens, a public housing project in Chicago.
